01 March 2007: Ambassador Ulrich Stacher and IEA Governing Board member Alfred Maier presented IEA's Chief Economist Dr. Fatih Birol with the Golden Honour Medal of the Austrian Republic and an accompanying statement signed by the Austrian President. The award recognises Dr. Birol's outstanding contribution to the understanding of global energy issues through his work firstly with OPEC and now the IEA.

01 October 2006: Dr. Fatih Birol, IEA Chief Economist, was awarded the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques. The award, instigated by Napoleon in 1808 for outstanding academic achievements, is in recognition of Dr. Birol's work on energy economics. The award was presented by Dominique Maillard, France’s Director General of Energy.

01 April 2006: IEA senior energy analyst Maria Argiri was honoured as a 2005 winner of the prestigious Key Women in Energy - Global Awards. She was recognised for her sustained work on the World Energy outlook series. The annual Key Women in Energy - Global Awards identify and recognise women who have made significant contributions or achievements in the Energy Sector.
01 October 2005: Dr. Fatih Birol received the Highest Distinction Medal for Outstanding Service to the Turkish Republic from the Government of Turkey, the presentation was made in Paris.

Energy Information Administration grant an award in recognition of
the analytical excellence of the World Energy Investment Outlook. The
award was presented during the IEA Governing Board meeting in Paris.
