18 February 2013: During a presentation at the International Petroleum Week in London, the President of Energy Institute, Joan MacNaughton, presented Dr. Birol with the title of Honorary Fellow of the Energy Institute.

14 June 2012: Dr. Birol, has been named Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic; the highest ranking honour of the Italian Republic. The award was presented to Dr. Birol by Mr. Carlo Maria Oliva, the Italian Ambassador to the OECD and Ambassador Giandomenico Magliano, Italian representative to the IEA Governing Board, on behalf of President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. Dr Birol received the award in Paris on 13 June for his outstanding contribution for improving the understanding of the global energy issues. Also present were IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven, IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones,  several OECD Ambassadors and IEA Governing Board representatives as well as the Turkish Ambassador to France.

30 November 2009: At a presentation of the results of the WEO-2009 in AGH-University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Mr. Waldemar Pawlak, presented Dr. Birol with the "Decoration for Merit to the Energy Industry" from the Polish Ministry of Economy and praised Dr. Birol's long years of outstanding contributions.  Cracow Nov 09

30 November 2009: Dr. Birol also received from the rector of AGH-University of Science and Technology the "Stanislaw Staszic" medal in recognition of his contribution to the energy sector. AGH Award

19 November 2009: The Chief Economist of the IEA, Dr. Fatih Birol, received the Federal cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz/Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse), the only general state decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany. In a ceremony at the German Ministry of Economy (BMWI) in Berlin, State Secretary Jochen Homann, acknowledged Dr. Birol's "outstanding work" on economic analyses. He particularly praised the IEA flagship publication World Energy Outlook, which is designed and directed by Dr. Birol, for its "comprehensive, timely and independent view" and said the study had become an important reference for the German energy and climate policy.

12 November 2009: At a presentation of the results of the WEO-2009 in the Hague, Netherlands, Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Hon. Maria van der Hoeven congratulated IEA Chief Economist, Dr. Birol, noting that he is responsible for the "flagship publication" of the IEA, and presented him with a Special Award for his impressive contribution.  More info click here.

01 March 2007: Ambassador Ulrich Stacher and IEA Governing Board member Alfred Maier presented IEA's Chief Economist Dr. Fatih Birol with the Golden Honour Medal of the Austrian Republic and an accompanying statement signed by the Austrian President. The award recognises Dr. Birol's outstanding contribution to the understanding of global energy issues through his work firstly with OPEC and now the IEA. birol_austria_award

01 October 2006: Dr. Fatih Birol, IEA Chief Economist, was awarded the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques. The award, instigated by Napoleon in 1808 for outstanding academic achievements, is in recognition of Dr. Birol's work on energy economics. The award was presented by Dominique Maillard, France's Director General of Energy.

01 April 2006:  IEA senior energy analyst Maria Argiri was honoured as a 2005 winner of the prestigious Key Women in Energy - Global Awards. She was recognised for her sustained work on the World Energy outlook series. The annual Key Women in Energy - Global Awards identify and recognise women who have made significant contributions or achievements in the Energy Sector.

01 October 2005: Dr. Fatih Birol received the Highest Distinction Medal for Outstanding Service to the Turkish Republic from the Government of Turkey, the presentation was made in Paris.  FBOct2005

01 June 2005: Dr. Fatih Birol, IEA Chief Economist, received the annual International Association of Energy Economics' 'Outstanding Contributions to the Profession' award for 2004, in Taipei. Taipei Acceptance Speech

01 April 2004: World Energy Investment Outlook received an award from World Coal Institute for analytical excellence.

01 March 2004: ABN AMRO honoured the IEA with an Award of Excellence. Dr. Birol received the award in Amsterdam.

01 February 2004: U.S. Department of Energy and the Energy Information Administration grant an award in recognition of the analytical excellence of the World Energy Investment Outlook. The award was presented during the IEA Governing Board meeting in Paris. feb2004

01 April 2002: Russian Academy of Sciences granted an award to the World Energy Outlook 2001 for the objectivity of its analysis and its balanced treatment or energy resources, the award was presented in Moscow.  Acceptance Speech
