30 January 2014: IEA Chief Economist Fatih Birol received the Japanese Emperor's Order of the Rising Sun at a ceremony hosted by Ambassador Kazuo Kodama of Japan in Paris on 30 January. The honour was awarded in recognition of the guidance Dr. Birol has provided to Japanese policy makers for close to two decades on issues of energy security, environmental protection and economic development through his work leading the World Energy Outlook (WEO). Mr. Shinichi Kihara, IEA Governing Board representative of Japan, was present at the ceremony to deliver messages of appreciation from Mr. Motegi, Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. Ueda, Commissioner of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. Other attendees included ambassadors and members of the IEA Energy Business Council as well as IEA staff, including past and present members of Dr. Birol’s team. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Birol dedicated the award to his father, Professor Kemal Birol.
11 December 2013: Dr Fatih Birol was awarded the Order of the Polar Star (Nordstjärneorden) by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in recognition of Dr Birol's significant contribution to a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between international energy markets, the economic drivers for growth and the effects on the climate and the environment. The Order was presented by Anna-Karin Hatt, Sweden's Minister of Enterprise, Energy and Communications at a special reception and attended by a number of ambassadors, both from IEA member countries and others, as well as high-level officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications. After receiving the award, Dr Birol presented the findings of the 2013 edition of the World Energy Outlook at the Swedish parliament.

22 October 2013: Dr Fatih Birol, the IEA Chief Economist, was awarded a Doctorate of Science honoris causa by Imperial College London at the Royal Albert Hall on 23 October 2013. The title, in recognition of Dr Birol’s “contribution towards the economic analysis of global energy issues and the championing the cause of universal energy access over the last decade”, was conferred by the College’s President and Rector, Sir Keith O’Nions. 21 May 2013: Dr. Fatih Birol was presented with two special awards from the Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister, Hussein Al-Shahristani, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hoshyar Zebari in appreciation of the work he and his team carried out for the Iraq Energy Outlook in 2012. The awards were presented to Dr. Birol by Fareed Yasseen, the Iraqi Ambassador to France, at a ceremony held in his honour. In addition to IEA senior managers and the WEO team, the ceremony was attended by over a dozen OECD ambassadors, several industry representatives, as well as high-level French and Iraqi officials. During his speech, Ambassador Yasseen thanked Dr Birol and his team for carrying out what he called an extremely important piece of work that presented “a realist’s perspective” on the development of Iraq’s energy sector, adding that the Iraq Energy Outlook had become a key document for Iraqi policymakers and officials.

18 February 2013: During a presentation at the International Petroleum Week in London, the President of Energy Institute, Joan MacNaughton, presented Dr. Birol with the title of Honorary Fellow of the Energy Institute.
14 June 2012: Dr. Birol, has been named Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic; the highest ranking honour of the Italian Republic. The award was presented to Dr. Birol by Mr. Carlo Maria Oliva, the Italian Ambassador to the OECD and Ambassador Giandomenico Magliano, Italian representative to the IEA Governing Board, on behalf of President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. Dr Birol received the award in Paris on 13 June for his outstanding contribution for improving the understanding of the global energy issues. Also present were IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven, IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones, several OECD Ambassadors and IEA Governing Board representatives as well as the Turkish Ambassador to France.

30 November 2009: At a presentation of the results of the WEO-2009 in AGH-University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Mr. Waldemar Pawlak, presented Dr. Birol with the "Decoration for Merit to the Energy Industry" from the Polish Ministry of Economy and praised Dr. Birol's long years of outstanding contributions. 30 November 2009: Dr. Birol also received from the rector of AGH-University of Science and Technology the "Stanislaw Staszic" medal in recognition of his contribution to the energy sector. AGH Award
19 November 2009: The Chief Economist of the IEA, Dr. Fatih Birol, received the Federal cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz/Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse), the only general state decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany. In a ceremony at the German Ministry of Economy (BMWI) in Berlin, State Secretary Jochen Homann, acknowledged Dr. Birol's "outstanding work" on economic analyses. He particularly praised the IEA flagship publication World Energy Outlook, which is designed and directed by Dr. Birol, for its "comprehensive, timely and independent view" and said the study had become an important reference for the German energy and climate policy.

01 March 2007: Ambassador Ulrich Stacher and IEA Governing Board member Alfred Maier presented IEA's Chief Economist Dr. Fatih Birol with the Golden Honour Medal of the Austrian Republic and an accompanying statement signed by the Austrian President. 01 October 2006: Dr. Fatih Birol, IEA Chief Economist, was awarded the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques. The award, instigated by Napoleon in 1808 for outstanding academic achievements, is in recognition of Dr. Birol's work on energy economics. The award was presented by Dominique Maillard, France's Director General of Energy.

01 April 2006: IEA senior energy analyst Maria Argiri was honoured as a 2005 winner of the prestigious Key Women in Energy - Global Awards. She was recognised for her sustained work on the World Energy outlook series. The annual Key Women in Energy - Global Awards identify and recognise women who have made significant contributions or achievements in the Energy Sector.
